The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was created in 1960 at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Its purpose was to coordinate the student protest movement. Sally Mary Caroline Belfrage, independent leftist, world travelling journalist, and author of five books, was born in Hollywood, California, in 1936, and raised in New York City, where her father, Cedric Belfrage founded, in 1948, the independent weekly radical newspaper The National Guardian.
